As most of you know, over the weekend, I attended the Coachella Music Festival in Indio, CA for the first time…. and it was absolutely amazing!! Although the weather didn’t hold up very well on Friday (it decided to rain and we had very, VERY strong gusts of wind), it was an experience of a lifetime. I got to see some of my favorite bands and spend the entire weekend with some of the people I love.
One of the best parts of the festival was seeing all the people who love music and just being able to be a part of that. Below, I have summed up all the artists I went to see and what I thought about their sets…. read them if you like, if not, don’t. Lol.
Friday:
- Abe Vigoda: Ehhh… hit or a miss.
- Kendrick Lamar: His set was full of energy and he was featured in a lot of other people’s sets too!
- M83: Great!
- Amon Tobin: Disappointment. I heard a couple of his songs from my iPod and couldn’t tell whether I liked him or not. After seeing him perform, I don’t think I like him at all. His set was REALLY slow when his music is generally supposed to be upbeat. It was sort of a total let down.
- The Black Keys: So much better than at Outside Lands!!!! They had their sound on point and sounded amazing. We went over to see Swedish House Mafia about 3/4 of the way thru The Black Keys set, but my friend and I secretly went back to catch a couple more songs!
- Swedish House Mafia: CRAZY!!!! I danced and jumped the entire set, non-stop. Thank goodness for Insanity because I probably would’ve died if I wasn’t sort of in shape.
Saturday:
- Childish Gambino: Loved it! He’s not the greatest rapper ever, but he’s clever and his beats are awesome! I’m also a huge fan of his because he plays Troy on the show Community and he’s a hilarious stand-up comedian.
- AWOLNATION: I had no idea who this guy was before I saw him at the festival, but his set was cool and I will be listening to him more often.
- tUnE-yArDs: Alright live. I like them better on my headphones.
- St. Vincent: OMG, Annie Clark is astonishing!!!!! Not only does she have an amazing voice, but she’s beautiful, knows how to rock the fuck out on the guitar, and she CROWD SURFED while singing an entire song!!!! Her set was definitely one of my favorites this weekend!
- The Shins: Highlight of the set was when they played “New Slang” from the Garden State soundtrack (which is one of the best movies ever, in my opinion).
- Bon Iver: Everybody makes fun of this guy because his songs are very slow and you can’t really understand what he’s saying, but I must say that he is quite impressive live! I really enjoyed his set.
- Miike Snow: He played two of my favorite songs “Sylvia” and “Animal”!!! That’s pretty much all I need. Lol.
- Radiohead: Classic Radiohead… they played a lot of both old and new stuff. They’re set was really good and as an encore, they played an additional 5-6 songs.
Sunday:
- Gotye: We ended up being in the very back for his set b/c the tent was way too small for all the people that were occupying it, so we didn’t get very good sound from where we were. However, Kimbra came on stage and performed “Somebody That I Used To Know” with him and he played a lot of my favorite songs from his album. To top it off, I had no idea he’s from Australia, so he had that sexy Australian accent going on :-).
- The Weeknd: Very upbeat, but I’d have to say that a lot of they’re songs sound alike, but they’re really good live too.
- Girl Talk: KILLED IT!!!! OMG!!! Between all the epic mash-ups, the TP-ing (toilet papering) of the crowd, confetti, and laser lights, this was definitely in my top five of performances. I mean, they mashed up “Rack City” by Tyga with M83’s “Midnight City” AND “The Motto” by Drake with Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep!!!!!! Ahhhhhhhh! I wish I could be back at that set right now!!!
- At The Drive-In: I had never heard of At the Drive-In before Coachella, but a friend recommended it so I went to their set for a few songs after Girl Talk. I must say, they had me jumping around for quite some time. Lol. I will definitely be adding them to my iPod.
- Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg: Yes… they actually did bring Tupac back as a hologram and it was funny b/c I couldn’t tell if it was really him or a hologram due to simply being cross-faded. For their show, our entire group smoked, because, well, we had to, it was Dre and Snoop!!! As if playing a bunch of their old school songs and bringing back Tupac wasn’t enough, they brought out Kendrick Lamar, Tony Yayo, Kurupt, Warren G, 50 Cent, and Eminem!!! Their set pretty much kept the goosebumps on my arms and it was the perfect way to end such an epic weekend.
I didn’t realize we saw so many shows until I typed it out! I’m so sad that it’s over, but it is nice to be back home. I will definitely be attending Coachella 2013!!!!
